Miller center celebrates its 1st birthday
as PARA’s busiest facility
Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority’s newest activity center is celebrating its first year of service to the community. Th
e Bobby Miller Activity Center will celebrate its first birthday on September 10, at the center located at 300 Bobby Miller Parkway Tuscaloosa. The event is free and open to the public. Membership or casual user fees apply to use the facility.
A casual celebration of customer appreciation is being planned with light refreshments throughout the day, 7 a.m. -5 p.m. Members and casual users can register for door prizes.
The Miller Center, PARA’s busiest center, “averages about 240 users per day,” says Alannah Farrell, Miller Center manager. “This sounds like a big number but it is spread out during the entire day and also includes group rentals. There is plenty of space for everyone to comfortably use the facility. Our average daily attendance amounts to about 84,000 users for the first year and we have 1,450 memberships,” she says.
“We feel very proud and fortunate to have completed our first year at the Miller Center with such great success,” says Farrell. “Now we’d like to let more folks know where we are and what a great facility the Miller Center is, so we hope they’ll come by and see what we have to offer people who live and work on the southern side of the county,” she says.
Mark Harrison, program supervisor for aquatics and outdoor adventures has had a busy year, too. “The Miller Center is a very beautiful facility that has been much needed and utilized in the community,” he reports, “there have been approximately 35,370 uses for the therapy pool and lap pool this year. PARA offers a wide variety of swim lessons at the Miller Center including Parent & Tot Swim lessons, Learn to Swim classes for youth, swim lessons for adults, Water Aerobics, Splash Parties and much more.”
With the tremendous growth in the southern end of the county, PARA was proud to open the Miller Center to the community on September 10, 2006. It was named for Tuscaloosa County Commissioner, Bobby Miller, who was instrumental in obtaining funding for the facility. The amenities of the approximately 58,000 square foot facility include a gymnasium, a recreational pool, a therapeutic pool, multipurpose rooms, a catering kitchen, an exercise room and a work out room on the lower level. A branch of the Tuscaloosa Public Library and a walking track are located on the upper level of the facility. Several regulation size ball fields are located in the park next to the center.
Annual center memberships are $125 for a family, $100 for a couple, $85 for an individual, $85 for senior couples and $60 for senior individuals. Memberships are not exclusive to one particular center and may be utilized at all five locations. For membership information, please inquire at any PARA center, call 205/758-0419, or visit www.tcpara.org.
