Capitol Park goes up

During the Great Depression, the ruins of the burned statehouse were dispersed or massed into a low mound with grass on top. A charitable foundation came to own the property in 1988 and began extensive historical and archaeological research. A design committee, which included historian Robert Mellown, drew up plans to create a ruin and, with materials returned by the townspeople, began placing some of the columns and other stone fragments in their original locations. Capitol Park now adorns the city and is frequently used for weddings, plays and other occasions.
