In addition to the more traditional PARAkids Summer Camp, Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority announces that it will offer four specialty camps this summer. They are: Outdoor Adventure/Hands-On Nature, Sports: Tennis, Golf, Soccer and Swim, Hands-On Tuscaloosa: Arts & Culture, and STEAM Discovery/Hands-On Science.
These specialty camps are the inspiration of Casie Jones, PARA’s new Youth Program Supervisor. Jones is a highly qualified teacher, environmental science educator and health education specialist and directed PARA’s Outdoor Adventure Camp in recent years.
“Specialty camps are designed for a more immersive experience featuring professional instruction and advanced exploration,” said Jones. “It will allow campers to learn more about themselves, their environment and culture,” she said.
Specialty camps are organized by age with a maximum of 15 participants in three-day programs for 4-8 graders and two-day programs for K-3 graders. Advance registration is required due to limited camp size. Dates and a brief description of each camp are as follows:
Hiking, camping and outdoor skills, archery, farm-to-table
Featuring instruction with pros at Tuscaloosa Tennis Center,
Ol’ Colony Golf, and hands-on experiences with volleyball, soccer and swim coaches.
Urban hikes, Civil Rights Trail, Monster Art scavenger hunt, BAMA Theatre tour and local food trucks
Aquatic ecology, environmental education and math & engineering challenges.
