PARA and YMCA collaborate for Tuscaloosa Sports League

Tuscaloosa, Ala. ~ Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority announces a collaboration with the YMCA Benjamin Barnes Branch to introduce the Tuscaloosa Baseball League. A baseball clinic to kick off the league is scheduled for March 20 at 9 am – noon at McDonald Hughes Community Center, on Ball Field A, located at 3101 MLK, Jr. Blvd.

Registration is free and suggested for youth ages 5-12 by visiting the Hughes Center or YMCA Barnes Branch in advance of the event.

Jay Logan, Director of Community Outreach, PARA4life and Youth Athletics, states, “PARA and the Benjamin Barnes YMCA by joining forces creates a unified league that provides baseball as an inclusive outlet for all children of west Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa baseball league is a product of what happens when we have true community partnerships. We are already looking to host more youth sports camps with other community stakeholders soon.”

Jeff Knox, CEO of the YMCA states, “Our goal is to provide opportunities for fun, skill development, team building, and mentoring of our young people through sports to everyone, in general, and the children in West Tuscaloosa, specifically.”

The clinic will be directed by former University of Alabama Head Baseball Coach Jim Wells and past UA standouts Andy Phillips, Antonio Bostic, and Lance Cormier are expected to be in attendance.

The league, which will play under the Alabama Dixie Youth guidelines, is expected to follow an eight games season with tournament and interlocking games with other community leagues as schedules allow.

Players should dress comfortably and bring a glove and water bottle. Parents and spectators should wear a face covering and bring a chair or blanket. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the McDonald Hughes Community Safe Room.

In order to “Help Our Kids Play Ball!” donations orapproved equipmentwill be accepted in the lobby of the Downtown Branch, YMCA located at 2300 13th Street throughout the month of March.
