THE FUTURES LEAGUE

Grades K-1, 2-3

General Information & Age Divisions:

  • ALL PARTICIPANTS IN THE FUTURES LEAGUE WILL BE DRAFTED & PLACED ON TEAMS DICTATED BY SCHOOL ZONE.
  •
  • K-1 COED:
These divisions within the Futures League are for Kindergartners and 1st graders. Players will receive an introduction to basketball focusing solely on core fundamentals: dribbling, shooting, passing, defending, basic offensive & defensive sets, etc. The goal is to develop players without cutting corners to win the game.
  • The Kindergarten league will be a 3V3 Half-Court leagues. Teams will be limited to 5-6 players and will be dictated by school zone.
  • 1st Grade league will be a 5V5 league with a max roster of 8.

  • GRADES 2-3:
    2ND GRADE BOYS  |  2ND GRADE GIRLS   |  3RD GRADE BOYS  |  3RD GRADE GIRLS:

Participants in 2nd and 3rd grade playing within the Futures League will be split into their respective age divisions.* The focus will remain on the fundamentals of basketball.
  •
  • *Please note, if there are not enough registered players in each individual age division, we will combine them before selecting teams. This will allow for a well-rounded league where participants are not having to play the same team repeatedly.

Key Elements of the Program:

Both the Futures League and the Capstone League will work closely with the high school head coach in each school zone to have an active role in the development of players through clinics, school gym time (high school & middle school), and TBA nights at home basketball games.

Coaches in the Futures League will be given access to the MOJO sports app (a partner of the Junior NBA). The app covers fundamentals for developing players as well as free age-appropriate lesson plans and videos that demonstrate drills. The head coach and his/her assistant coach can guarantee a spot for their own kid(s) on their team.

How to Register:

**Players will register by choosing their respective grade. There will be one option for Kindergarteners and one for 1st Grade as those leagues are COED.

2nd and 3rd grade will have options for girls leagues or boys leagues.

-Please make sure your child's school grade is entered into the system in "My Account" prior to registration. If this step is not completed, you may receive an error message such as "no family member eligible for that registration." CAPSTONE LEAGUE

Grades 4-6

General Information & Age Divisions:

The Capstone League will be broken down into two conferences.

  • Capstone Conference
  • Black Warrior Conference

  • * Leagues will be separated out by grade.
  • * Since every player in these grades will play on teams dictated by the school they attend

and the high school it feeds into, we will conduct an evaluation day or two as needed for
these grades. The evaluations will be conducted by school zone specific coaches along
with advisory board members if possible.

A coach CANNOT conduct evaluations for the grade for which they plan to coach in and cannot evaluate their own child.

**Example: If I want to coach a 4th grade team I can help evaluate the 5th and 6th graders but I cannot evaluate the 4th graders. This will help to eliminate any bias, perceived or otherwise.

* Once evaluations are concluded should a school zone have enough players for multiple
teams in that grade teams will be selected based strictly on evaluation grade. The top
players graded out will play on that school zone’s top team or teams and play in the
Capstone Conference. The rest of the players will be formed into teams via a draft and play
in the Black Warrior Conference.

**Example: 28 5th graders are evaluated. It is determined that 9 of those 28 grade out high enough to play in a more competitive environment of basketball. Those 9 players will represent the school zone in the Capstone Conference. The other 19 players will first be divided up by: 2 Head Coaches and their 2 Assistant coaches children will be frozen. Then the rest selected via a draft. NOTE: There is always the chance that a school zone could have enough players grade out high enough to have multiple teams from one grade in the Capstone Conference. Should that happen, the Head Coaches and their assistants will conduct a draft to even out the teams as closely as possible.
